*The Institute for Ethics in Public Life invites you to join us for "Social
Media and Mental Health" at 3:30pm on Wednesday, March 12, with special
guest Dr. Jennifer Bremser, Associate Professor of Psychology at the SUNY
Plattsburgh Branch Campus at Queensbury.*

It is now widely accepted that the United States is experiencing a youth
mental health crisis

(social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and others argue that this is an
international phenomenon

though it first manifested in the U.S.). Starting around 2012

there have been significant increases in anxiety, depression, mental health
diagnoses, suicidal ideation, and self-harm for young people. None of this
is likely to be a surprise to those of us working on college campuses over
this period.

Why is this happening? There are multiple causes at work, but a key one is
likely to be social media.

For today's discussion, we'll explore the trends in youth mental health,
the possible causes, and the evidence that social media is a major cause
for the international crises we are experiencing.

Dr. Jennifer Bremser is an Assoc. Prof. of Psychology and the Associate
Chair of Psychology for the SUNY Plattsburgh Branch Campus at Queensbury.
Her research is on health psychology and neuroscience.
