The 54th Kent State and Jackson State Commemorative Ceremony will be held
on Friday, May 10th at 12pm outside of Kehoe at the memorial site (at the
pine tree behind visitor parking at Kehoe). Remarks will be made by
Allison Heard and members of Minor Adjustments will be singing.

*What is this memorial?*
A protest was scheduled for May 4, 1970 on the Kent State campus by
students who were voicing opposition to the Vietnam War and the military
intrusion in Cambodia. Although initially peaceful, after a National Guard
general told protesters to disperse, violence broke out. Four people were
killed and nine were injured when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on
the students gathered.
Just days later, on May 15 early in the morning, two students at Jackson
State University in Jackson, Mississippi, were shot and killed and 12 were
injured by police. The students had gathered to protest racism.

SUNY Plattsburgh’s first memorial was held in 1971 to commemorate the first
anniversary of the shootings. The Student Association organized that
memorial and has continued to commemorate these events every year since.
