*The professor:*
Learn about Latin America from an internationally trained scholar, cultural
anthropologist Esteban Acuña Cabanzo. Dr. Acuña Cabanzo grew up in
Colombia's capital, Bogota, has lived as a migrant in Mexico and the United
States, earned advanced degrees at European universities, and does research
on the migration of Romani ("Gypsy") people in the Americas. He is a
Scholar in Residence in Plattsburgh's anthropology department. He is also
currently working on a local project on migrations at the US northern
border.
*The course:*
What does it mean to live in Latin America? How have the histories of
colonization and globalization affected how people live today?What are the
commonalities shared by the peoples of Latin America ? How can we better
understand the diversity of cultures within these commonalities? In this
course, we'll learn about indigenous and minority histories, politics and
economies, gender roles, religions and spiritualities, development and
inequality, music and other arts, illegality and informality, displacement
and migration, violence, among other rich topics that have unique
expressions within Latin American nations.
