Join the Institute for Ethics in Public Life at SUNY Plattsburgh
for an engaging colloquy featuring Stuart Brody and Gene Guberman
Wednesday, February 9, 2022
Noon, over Zoom (link to be provided)
The Institute for Ethics in Public Life kicks off the spring 2022 season of
colloquies with a two-part examination of democracy under assault. In the
first conversation, Institute director Dr. Jonathan Slater and past
Institute Fellow Dr. Jan Plaza will lead an exchange with Institute senior
scholar Stuart Brody and psychoanalyst and educator Gene Guberman. Brody,
an attorney, is author most recently of The Law of Small Things. His career
has spanned more than 35 years and includes significant time held in public
office and devoted to public service. He travels widely, speaking to
audiences about ethics and integrity. Guberman has been a practicing
psychotherapist for more than 40 years and serves as a faculty member and
supervisor at the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, as
well as The Psychoanalytic Training Institute of the New York Counseling
and Guidance Service. A former editor of the journal, Issues in
Psychoanalytic Psychology, Guberman is author of Micro-Emotional Abuse:
working through psychic wounds and has presented internationally. Brody and
Guberman will focus their observations and comments on the political
character and psychological make-up of demagogues and will argue why such
personalities pose an ominous threat to democratic values.
Ethics Institute colloquies are open to the entire SUNY Plattsburgh
community.
The Institute for Ethics in Public Life is supported by generous gifts to
the Plattsburgh College Foundation.
For further information about the Institute, contact Dr. Jonathan Slater,
director, at slaterjr at plattsburgh.edu.
Join the Institute for the second part of Democracy and Demagoguery on
Wednesday, February 16, when Dr. Henry Milner will discuss ways democracies
can meet the challenges posed by the growing threat of populist and
authoritarian forces.
