Meritocratic values have long been seen as quintessential ideals of higher
education. They reflect the conviction that excellence in the mastery of
knowledge should be the primary basis for evaluating and rewarding academic
achievements; and that, moreover, these rewards should be open to all those
who develop their capabilities and exert effort, regardless of any other
characteristics they may possess. Recently, however, meritocracy has come
under increasing criticism in the broader society and within higher
education. Join Ethics Institute founding director and Distinguished
Service Professor Emeritus Dr. Tom Moran in conversation as he explores
these criticisms and their meaning to the academic enterprise.
