Dear Students,
All of us want to feel welcome and comfortable on campus, no matter who we
are or what our individual needs might be. As a campus community, we are at
our best when everyone is welcomed, respected, and included, no matter
their background or disability.
But sometimes we find ourselves ill-equipped to interact with a person who
has unique needs. That's particularly true when those needs involve
disabilities, which may not be apparent.
*A**ccessibility, usability, and inclusion *are closely related elements
involved in creating digital content that works for everyone. *Acquiring
accessibility skills *is a good way to be well-prepared to assist others in our
diverse community. *They can also be assets for your resume.*
*Free Courses Available*
Now students can acquire or enhance their accessibility skills by taking
advantage of a *free *SUNY-sponsored membership with *Deque University*. You
can take single interactive, online courses or complete entire curricula,
culminating with a certificate of completion. These courses are excellent
for both establishing new skills and expanding existing ones.
*Courses of particular interest to students:*
- Overview of the ADA: Basic Concepts
- Disability Etiquette Basics
- Effective Communication, Part 1: Communicating in Person
- Effective Communication, Part 2: Remote Communication
Depending on your major, you may be interested in other courses and
certificates. View a complete list of courses and curricula on the Deque
University Web site <https://dequeuniversity.com/curriculum/online-classes/>
.
Students who present certificates for the four courses listed above, or any
certificate for a completed curriculum may have *a chance to win a free
Accessibility: Unlocking Our Potential t-shirt.*
*Enroll today*
To enroll at no charge, please contact Dr. John Locke in the Electronic &
Information Technology (EIT) Accessibility Office at

*We’re in this together: famous people living with disabilities*
Mexican surrealist artist Frida Kahlo contracted polio at six years old,
and at 18, she was in a horrific traffic accident, which left her in severe
pain. Still, she lived a productive life. “At the end of the day we can
endure much more than we think we can.” Watch her life story as depicted by
actor Salma Hayek (Screen Actors Guild 2003 Best Actress in a Leading Role)
in Frida, (AFI Award for 2003’s Movie of the Year). The DVD is available on
reserve at the Feinberg Library.
*Answer to the September 8 trivia question:*
What percentage of the US population has a physical or cognitive
challenge? a. 50%, b. 42%, c. 26%*,* d. 11%
C, 26% is the correct answer.
Watch for our next "Accessibility: Unlocking Our Potential" post, including
a new trivia question in the Friday, October 8 Student Digest.

John Locke, Ph.D.
