Greetings:

I write with one last reminder of Part Two of our Three-Part "*Conversations
on Canada*" Series. This presentation will feature Dr. Kevin McMahon, the
John R. Reitemeyer Professor of Political Science and Director of the
Graduate Program in Public Policy at Trinity College in Hartford, CT.
Details for this event follow:

Presentation Title:
"*What if the U.S. Had Canada's Notwithstanding Clause? Constitutional
Lessons from the North*"

Overview:
Canada's Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms includes a provision--known
as the Notwithstanding Clause--that empowers the federal parliament and
provincial legislatures to essentially ignore a ruling from the Supreme
Court. This concept is largely foreign to the United States. But what if
the U.S. had such a clause in its Constitution? We'll consider this idea
and in the process explore Canada's constitutional politics.

Presenter's Short Bio:
Dr. Kevin J. McMahon is the John R. Reitemeyer Professor of Political
Science and the Director of the Graduate Program in Public Policy at
Trinity College in Hartford, CT. He has written two award-winning books on
the U.S. presidency and the political origins and consequences of Supreme
Court decisions. In 2005, he spent a semester at the University of Montreal
as a Fulbright Distinguished Research Chair.

Presentation Date and Time:
Monday, April 5, 2021
