Writing for The Intercept, Murtaza Hussain observes: “Unfortunately for
society as a whole, one of the best ways to monetize engagement on the
internet is by generating rage.” Dr. Richard H. Robbins, past Institute
Fellow, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and Chair of the Anthropology
Department, argues that we cannot understand that rage without considering
the economy and the creeping depression that has afflicted the bottom 90
percent of the American population over the past 40 years. As the events of
just this last year have sadly proven, many of the practices and ideologies
that have emerged within this environment are morally wrong and even
deadly. Rich joins Institute director Dr. Jonathan Slater in a dialogue
that attempts to answer the question: Who stands to gain from such violence?
