representations in American sporting culture. Using an interdisciplinary
approach, this course will draw upon historical, media, literary and
sociological studies of the African-American sporting experience. First,
the course will provide students with an overview of the fields of Sport
History and Sport Studies. Secondly, the course will examine the history of
African-American professional and amateur athletes and their connection to
struggles for racial justice during the Jim Crow Era and the Civil Rights
Era. Next, the course will address national and transnational media
representations and circulations of Black athletes. Finally, the course
will also explore contemporary athletes and their relationship to activism
and resistance in sports.
