*Emerging Opportunities and Constraints for Reforestation in the 21st
Century*


Over 1 billion trees are planted across the US each year for a myriad of
reasons including reforestation after timber harvests, mineland
reclamation, carbon markets, afforestation, and restoration. These efforts
have been stymied by a shrinking nursery sector, lack of source-identified
seed, and climate change. Novel insects and diseases have further
accelerated losses of forest canopy particularly in the Eastern US.  In
this seminar I will discuss tools such as eastern seed zones and the forest
ecosystem atlas to help managers select species and seed sources. I will
also report on recent advancements in resistance breeding and the
importance of partnerships, such as the Butternut Tree Restoration
Initiative, in resolving complicated landscape-level problems.
