Tuesday Talks presents Dr. Andrew Schopieray, Assistant Professor of
Mathematics at SUNY Plattsburgh, speaking on "Distinguishing Things"
on *Tuesday,
March 31, 2026 at 12pm* in the Angell College Center's Alumni Conference
Room. Below is an abstract of Dr. Schopieray's presentation.
One of the daunting tasks in life is to distinguish one thing from another.
Which day is it? Which color is my shirt? Is that a car or a truck? Even
these casual jaunts into the world of distinguishing demonstrate that it is
a messy business, and the situation unapologetically deteriorates as we
investigate further. Which election districts are fair? Am I feeling
anxiety or trepidation? Is this image artificial or genuine? We will
successfully answer none of these questions but still enjoy a romp into
mathematics as the art and science of distinguishing things as I discuss
some of my current research regarding symmetry, representation theory, and
mathematical physics. I encourage attendance despite any prior
mathematical trauma because most of what I will talk about will not feel
like mathematics as you're accustomed to.
