*WHAT REMAINS: Voices from the Margins of History invites visitors into a
powerful visual archive of African American life in the Adirondacks and
Lake Champlain region during the early twentieth century, captured through
the lens of photographer Daniel S. Brush. This exhibit
illuminates individuals whose stories have often gone unrecorded, yet whose
presence shaped the cultural fabric of the North Country. *

*Through these striking images, guests encounter men and women who embodied
dignity, resilience, and quiet strength. Though many were working-class
individuals, their lives reflect a richness of experience—rooted in
community, labor, family, and aspiration. Each photograph offers a glimpse
into lives lived with purpose, revealing both the visible and the unseen
threads of history.*

*Blending artistry with historical inquiry, What Remains challenges us to
reconsider whose stories are preserved and whose are left behind. It is an
invitation to witness, reflect, and honor the enduring legacy of those who
lived, loved, and contributed meaningfully to the region—ensuring their
voices are no longer at the margins, but central to our shared
understanding of the past.*
