The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Dr. Eric Sandvol*, University at Buffalo, Department of Earth Sciences

*Imaging the deep interior of the earth: Applications to the Tibetan
Plateau and the thickest crust on the earth*

Plate Tectonics is the paradigmatic theory that explains the evolution of
the earth over millions of years. This theory essentially involves the
motion of rigid tectonic plates across the surface of the earth with little
to no internal deformation. It has long been known that this is only a
rough approximation and that we do see evidence of internal deformation,
including the Tibetan plateau where the deforming plate appears to be very
weak and over geologic crust appears to thicken via long term flow. New
approaches to imaging the deep interior of the earth have allowed us to
generate new pictures that have yielded surprising new correlations between
mantle and crustal structure in Tibet.

*Friday January 30** 3:30**pm. *
