The James Augustus Wilson Scholarship is now accepting nominations!

The James Augustus Wilson Scholarship was created to honor James Augustus
Wilson, class of 1902. Mr. Wilson was the first African American student to
enroll and graduate from Plattsburgh Normal School, the first incarnation
of what we now know as SUNY Plattsburgh.


The James Augustus Wilson Scholarship recognizes and supports
underrepresented students for their academic achievement and leadership,
including students who are from low-income backgrounds (e.g. Pell-eligible
as undergraduates) and/or are first generation college students (students
whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree).

To be eligible for the scholarship the student must:

·         Be an undergraduate

·         Be enrolled full-time (12 credits or more)

·         Be a U.S. citizen or Green Card holder

·         A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher is preferred, however
students with a lower GPA are eligible for consideration

·         ** To be eligible for this scholarship

o   Students must self-nominate by submitting an essay *and*

o   Be nominated by a faculty, staff, alumnus/a

**A nominee not having both will be considered ineligible and not be
evaluated by the scholarship review committee.



Nominations and essays for this award should express the student’s
commitment to: addressing educational disparities, eliminating barriers to
equal opportunity and access to education, promoting justice and the
inclusion of all individuals regardless of identity or background.

The nomination due date is *February 22, 2026*. Any applications received
after this date will not be considered for this round. It is expected that
FOUR nominees will be awarded a scholarship up to $2500 apiece. The
scholarship will be applied toward the spring 2026 semester.



**Please note that ALL scholarships are to be applied to a semester bill
and are NOT paid out in cash to the student. **



Scholarship recipients are scheduled to be notified in late February/early
March. Please note that the names of winners may be advertised as
recipients of the scholarship and may be asked to write a thank you letter
to the Plattsburgh College Foundation.



This scholarship is made possible by charitable gifts to the Plattsburgh
College Foundation. The James Augustus Wilson Scholarship program is
