The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Colin Powers - **Executive Director, **Boquet River Association*


*Volunteer-driven watershed restoration in the Adirondack Park*


Volunteer-driven restoration is a powerful, low-cost way for communities to
drive meaningful ecological change in their own backyards. Colin Powers,
the Executive Director of the Boquet River Association (BRASS) describes
how this volunteer-based organization has planted over 270,000 trees,
removed dams, built flood resilience, and protected water quality for 40
years.



The newest activity in the BRASS toolbox is Low-Tech Process Based
Restoration – the practice of using simple, hand-built structures instead
of machinery to restore degraded streams and riverscapes. Using natural
materials, small crews of workers build rock and wood structures that trap
sediment, slow erosion and recharge aquifers. In 2025, BRASS built the
first of these in the Adirondack Park with surprising results.
