*Fellowship Opportunity – Call for Applications*
Spring 2027
The Institute for Ethics in Public Life supports SUNY Plattsburgh’s efforts
to inculcate in its students – and members of the community-at-large –
values of civic responsibility by providing fellowships for full-time
faculty members to spend a semester in residence at the Institute. During
their fellowship, Fellows participate in a faculty professional development
program that explores ways they can incorporate civic readiness skills and
ethical reasoning into the courses they teach (60 min./week + some prep
time). During the residency program, Fellows are also expected to
participate in the intellectual life of the Institute by attending
discussions and presentations organized by the Institute (60-90 min./week,
usually on Wednesdays at 3:30pm) and spend time exploring significant
issues of civic readiness/engagement and ethics related to their own
interests.
Thanks to generous gifts made to the Plattsburgh College Foundation and
support provided by SUNY Plattsburgh, these fellowships provide release
time from one course, a private office in the Institute’s well-appointed
space in Hawkins Hall, and the opportunity to become a member of a growing
community of scholars engaged in promoting civic learning and
responsibility on campus. There can be up to three faculty members in
residence for Spring, 2027.
Since the Institute was founded in Fall, 1998, roughly 100 faculty members
from disciplines across campus have served as Fellows. Through the Fellows
program the Institute has helped to generate many new courses and in
redesigning others to incorporate a more explicit focus on civic
responsibility and public ethics. In addition, through the Fellows program
the Institute has aided in shaping a number of books and grants as well as
numerous professional papers and presentations.
To apply for this fellowship please send the complete set of application
materials (application, statement of interest, CV, and evidence of Chair
and Dean approval) by email to Dr. Daniel Lake, Director of the Institute
for Ethics in Public Life, at dlake001 at plattsburgh.edu. Applications will
be approved on a rolling basis with a goal of creating a diverse cohort of
Fellows and will close either when three Fellows have been selected or on
September 7, 2026. If you have any questions about the Fellowship program
or application process, please contact Dr. Lake via Email or at
518-564-5833.
