Be Ready: Emergency Preparedness Tips for Everyone and Those with Special Needs

Have you started to prepare for emergencies yet? Remember, you can begin
preparing for emergencies by taking three simple steps:

   1. Create an emergency supply kit.
   2. Make an emergency plan.
   3. Be informed about emergencies and the procedures that are most likely
   to occur in your area.

 When preparing for an emergency, it is important to keep in mind specific
medical needs that you or individuals in your family may have. For example,
additional items may be necessary to meet the needs of someone with a
temporary or long-term disability. These may include mobility aids,
eyeglasses, additional oxygen for those with respiratory difficulties,
medications, batteries for hearing aids, etc.

As you develop your emergency plan:

   - Keep in mind any transportation needs that may be required to assist
   you in your evacuation.
   - Make arrangements for alternate modes of transportation and assistance
   if needed.
   - Create a personal support network made up of family, friends,
   co-workers, and neighbors to provide assistance during an emergency.
   - Identify alternative locations and availability of life-sustaining
   equipment for treatment. If you use medical equipment, consider having
   back-up equipment stored at your evacuation site.
   - Be sure to register for special assistance programs that may be
   available in your community.
