Learn how the art market works from award-winning American artist, author,
publisher, and appraiser James Lancel McElhinney, who will explain how
galleries and auction houses set prices, what motivates collectors, how
appraisers develop opinions of value, and why some artworks (and not
others) are acquired by museums. McElhinney is the author of six books on
drawing and painting and numerous essays in magazines and peer reviewed
journals. He is a recipient of a grant from the Pollock Krasner Foundation,
and a National Endowment for the Arts visual artist fellowship. McElhinney
holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from Yale. His work has been
shown in galleries and nonprofit venues nationwide. His work is found in
numerous museum collections. McElhinney has conducted nearly 100 interviews
with prominent artist dealers, collectors, curators, scholars, and artists.
He is presently a Trustee of the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York,
with residences in Manhattan and the Champlain Valley.
