Please join us for the “Distinguished Fulbright Chair in Québec Studies
Lecture,” featuring Dr. Joceyln Létourneau, professor emeritus at
Université Laval, Québec City, and the SUNY Plattsburgh 2025-2026
Distinguished Fulbright Chair in Québec Studies.
TALK TITLE: “Are Quebecers about to say Yes to independence?” by Dr. Joceyln
Létourneau
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, November 5 at 2:00 pm
LOCATION: Krinovitz Hall inside Hawkins Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh
DESCRIPTION: Dr. Jocelyn Létourneau gauges and challenges the statement
advanced by nationalist leaders, boosted in their belief of recent public
opinion polls, that Quebecers are more and more willing to opt for
independence. Létourneau argues that they are mistaken in their assessment
of the popular mood in Quebec, and are also off-target in their appraisal
of the present situation of the province. This presentation examines how
nationalist leaders seem to overlook or marginalize several significant
factors that seriously jeopardize their aspirations of seeing Quebecers
massively support independence if asked to vote on this issue - which is
precisely the aim of Paul St-Pierre-Plamondon, head of the sovereigntist
Parti Québécois, if his political party wins the general election of
October 2026.
NOTE: As a reception will take place immediately after the discussion
concludes, your kind RSVP, using the registration link below, by Friday,
