*The Institute for Ethics in Public Life invites you to join us TODAY at
3:30pm in person or on Zoom for "Did Universities Get Too Woke?" *

Over the last couple of years American universities have increasingly been
attacked for being too "woke". "Wokeism" or "woke ideology" is seen as the
source of a host of ills including censorship or "cancellation" of
dissenting perspectives in the name of promoting conformity with a
particular ideology - that of "wokeness." Supposedly, American universities
have given up their educational mission in favor of indoctrination and
ideological conformity.

The term comes from African-American English, where it has been used to
refer to an awareness of social and political issues facing Black people
(Black political consciousness) for at least 100 years. About a decade ago
its usage expanded to include a broader awareness of social inequalities
beyond racial injustice, such as sexism and LGBTQ+ rights. As it became
increasingly associated with a progressive social justice agenda, opponents
on the political right increasingly began to use "woke" and "wokism" as
sarcastic pejoratives, as part of a broader effort to de-legitimate
progressive social justice efforts.

It is now almost a matter of faith that American universities are too
"woke", and that it is a bad thing. For today's discussion, we'll consider
the extent to which either of those is true.

Please join us in person at the E. Thomas Moran Seminar Room, Institute for
Ethics in Public Life (Hawkins 233) or on Zoom (below).
