In alignment with the university’s *Plattsburgh Next* strategic plan and
its four pillars for success, Human Resource and Payroll Services has
expanded our onboarding program to enhance the experience of new employees
and foster long-term success.
What’s New?
To ensure a smooth transition and strong start, we’ve implemented several
new initiatives:
-
30-Day Check-In Email: All new full-time employees will receive an email
from Human Resource and Payroll Services approximately 30 days after their
start date. This message includes helpful links to university policies
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/administration-finance/policies-procedures/campus-handbook/index.html>
and employee benefits
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/about/offices-divisions/administration-finance/human-resources/benefits/index.html>
as well as information about our location
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/location/index.html> on the
Adirondack
Coast <https://www.goadirondack.com/>. It also serves as a checkpoint
to confirm the employee has received the necessary tools and training to
succeed—and provides an opportunity to ask questions.
-
60-Day Personalized Check-In: After 60 days of employment, Sarah Reyell,
Assistant Vice President for HR & Payroll Services, will schedule a brief
meeting with the new employee. This is a chance to connect personally,
provide support, and address any emerging concerns.
-
Supervisor Checklist Requirement: Topic-specific checklists for new
employees are now automatically sent to supervisors through the Online
Recruitment System when a new hire is made. These checklists—previously
underutilized—are now a required component of each new employee's file to
ensure consistent onboarding across campus.
Why These Changes?
Research shows that new employees often decide within their first 60 days
whether they feel successful and connected in their role. By adding more
structure and personal outreach to our onboarding process, we aim to:
-
Improve employee retention
-
Cultivate a stronger sense of community
-
Ultimately support student success and engage the North Country region—two
key pillars of the Plattsburgh Next strategic plan.
We are excited about these improvements and appreciate your collaboration
in making SUNY Plattsburgh a welcoming and supportive place to work.
