*The Institute for Ethics in Public Life invites you to join us for
"Artificial Intelligence and War,"* *TODAY at 3:30pm (in person or on Zoom,
see below).*

Just like the release of ChatGPT-3 triggered a surge of interest in the
commercial and non-commercial ways to use LLMs and similar forms of
generative artificial intelligence, recent developments in the capabilities
of AI have resulted in a lot of interest in military applications. On the
battlefields of Ukraine, both sides are using AI to improve the
effectiveness of "first-person view" (FPV) attack drones, for example, and
Ukraine in particular has proven to be adept at figuring out ways to boost
their combat capabilities with AI. In Gaza, the Israeli military is
reportedly using commercial AI to process intelligence gathered and
identify targets to be rapidly attacked.

The surge in interest in and use of AI for military purposes is completely
predictable, since anything that appears to grant an advantage will
normally be quickly exploited. In this particular case, questions about
whether AI should be used for waging war, and under what conditions, are
not being asked nearly as often as questions about how it can be used.

AI can be used in different ways, including enhancing the precision of
targeting, creating autonomous weapon systems, processing information, and
potentially even managing the battlefield by issuing orders to troops and
weapon systems. Some of these raise major ethical issues, while others
could make war more humane.

Please join us in person in the Thomas Moran Seminar Room, Institute for
Ethics in Public Life (Hawkins 233) or on Zoom (see below).
