Sept. 17 is Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day. In
recognition of these important annual events, the Institute for Ethics in
Public Life and the Plattsburgh Votes Team would like to invite you to a
series of events being held that day. These include:

Voter Registration tabling in the ACC from 11am to 1pm.
Plattsburgh Votes members, student volunteers, and Representatives from the
League of Women Voters of the North Country will be on hand to help you
register to vote, request an early mail ballot, and learn about the NY
Equal Rights Amendment that is on the ballot this year.

National Constitution Day Conversation from 1 to 2:30pm online.
All campus community members are welcome to join The National Constitution
Day Conversation, hosted by the American Association of State Colleges and
Universities' American Democracy Project. This facilitated dialog will give
participants a chance to participate in a discussion on the US Constitution
with students, faculty, and staff members at universities across the United
States. You can register to attend this event here

"How can YOU make a difference? A conversation with former U.S.
Representative Bill Owens and New York State Senator Dan Stec." from 7:30
to 9pm in the Alumni Conference Room, ACC.
It is easy to be cynical about politics in America today. Political
polarization is extreme, and partisanship in Congress is so bad that little
is done to address pressing problems while Congress lurches from crisis to
crisis. It is hard to even figure out what is happening, because news
organizations often seem to be reporting about different worlds. It is no
wonder that many Americans are completely apathetic about politics, or even
actively hostile to it.

Please join Former Representative Bill Owens and New York State Senator Dan
Stec in a conversation about the power we have when we are part of the
political process. They are joining us to talk about why they chose to run
for elected office, what they have learned from their public service about
why it is important to be an engaged citizen, and how it is still possible
to make a difference if we choose to take advantage of the power we have as
citizens in a democracy.

Light refreshments will be served.

*Representative Bill Owens, Esq.*, is a former member of Congress who
represented New York's 23rd and 21st Districts (which include Plattsburgh)
in the House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015. During his time in
Congress he served on the House Agriculture Committee, Appropriations
Committee, Armed Services Committee, Homeland Security Committee, and Small
Business Committee.

A practicing attorney and partner at Stafford Owens, Representative Owens
also serves on the board of the Canada Institute at the Woodrow Wilson
International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and is a member of
the Border Trade Alliance. He has been a resident of Plattsburgh for over
40 years, after being stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base while a
member of the U.S. Air Force.

*Senator Dan Stec* serves in New York's State Senate, representing the 45th
Senate District (which includes Plattsburgh) since 2021. Prior to his
election to the NY State Senate, Senator Stec served in the NY State
Assembly from 2013-2020 representing the 114th Assembly District. Senator
Stec serves as the Ranking Minority Senator on the Environmental
Conservation and Internetand Technology Committees. He also serves on the
Senate's Education, Health, Rules, State-Native American Relations and
Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committees.

A Queensbury native, Senator Stec served in the Navy for eight years after
earning his degree from Clarkson University before returning home to
Queensbury, where he served on the town council, as Town Supervisor for
five terms, and Chaired the Warren County Board of Supervisors for two
terms.

This event is sponsored by the Institute for Ethics in Public Life,
Department of Political Science, and Plattsburgh Votes team. The Institute
for Ethics in Public Life is generously supported by gifts to the
Plattsburgh College Foundation.
