This week at the Institute for Ethics in Public Life we've having a hybrid
(in-person or Zoom) conversation on US foreign policy at 3:30pm on
Thursday, Sept. 12.

In its Nov./Dec. 2023 issue, *Foreign Affairs *published "A Dysfunctional
Superpower: Can A Divided America Deter China and Russia?", by former
Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates. In the article, Sec. Gates explains
why he is very concerned about the combination of near future challenges by
various rivals including China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran while the US
is deeply divided, and lays out what he thinks we should be doing in
response. We'll critically discuss his argument and recommendations.

This is an opportunity to learn more about how experts view the current
international environment, consider the extent to which Sec. Gates'
perspective accurately describes the current situation and whether the
responses he proposes are likely to help.

*Sep. 17 (T): Constitution Day and National Voter Registration Day*

The Plattsburgh Vote team is starting the main push to maximize student
voter registration and turnout on Tuesday with *tabling in the ACC from
11am to 1pm with representatives from the League of Women Voters*. Students
will be able to register to vote, get help requesting absentee and early
ballots, and learn about candidate positions and the NY Equal Rights
Amendment, which is on the ballot on Nov. 5.

*From 1 to 2:30pm, all campus community members are welcome to join The
National Constitution Day Conversatio*n, hosted by the American Association
of State Colleges and Universities' American Democracy Project. This
facilitated dialog will give participants a chance to participate in a
discussion on the US Constitution with students, faculty, and staff members
at universities across the United States. You can register to attend this
event here
<https://aascu.org/events/national-constitution-day-conversation/>.

*From 7:30 to 9pm, we are welcoming former U.S. Representative Bill Owens
and NY State Senator Dan Stec to campus for a conversation on what we can
do as citizens to make a difference in our country. *We'll discuss why they
chose to enter politics, and what they have learned about citizenship and
the power of political engagement from their careers. This in-person only
event will be held in the Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center,
and light refreshments will be served.

Please join us for any and all of these activities, and teach faculty
please let your students know about these opportunities to register to
vote, discuss our Constitution, and learn more about how they can leverage
the power of their citizenship to make a difference.
