Tuesday Talks presents Lauren Zito, Assistant Professor of Communication
Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh, speaking on "The Artist's Wife - My time in
Brigus, Newfoundland" on *Tuesday, October 29, 2024 at 5pm* in the Angell
College Center's Alumni Conference Room. Below is an abstract of Lauren's
presentation.
I lived, worked and explored Kent Cottage in Brigus, Newfoundland for a
full month this past summer as part of an artist residency. I was selected
as the Visual Artist Resident for 2024 at Kent Cottage in Brigus which is
run by the Landfall Trust organization in Newfoundland. It was such a rich
and moving experience in all its simplicity. I felt myself enjoying the
rhythm of the bay, the rhythm of the animals - the light and the sounds.
I took this time to dive more deeply into the little known world and
headspace of Kathleen Kent, the wife of Rockwell Kent, during their brief
time at the cottage in Brigus, Newfoundland between 1914 and 1915. I spent
time writing, shooting images, and reimagining a script. While there is
much written about Rockwell Kent - both by others and from him directly (at
length!), there was very little written about his first wife, Kathleen
Kent. The only thing that remains are some letters she wrote to Rockwell
while he was off on his many adventures as well as a few letters to
friends. The letters are minimal, not very verbose and often hard to read
because unlike Rockwell who often wrote his letters on proper archival
writing paper, Kathleen wrote on whatever scrap of paper was available at
the time and they haven’t held up well over the last 100+ years.
Kathleen’s time in Brigus, Newfoundland was brief but her presence is still
felt in Kent Cottage. I’m looking forward to exploring more about her time
here through the footage and images that I gathered, and also how she felt
and endured, not just in the cottage and the town, but as the often
voiceless woman whose direction and life was not always her own. Video and
images of my stay in the Kent Cottage in Brigus, Newfoundland will be
shared.
