The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Peter Strand, *Geologist, Vermont Geological Survey

*What drives glacial cycles? A global perspective on ice ages using glacier
records*

Late-Pleistocene ice ages represent the largest changes in Earth’s climate
over the past one million years, with the most recent
glacial-to-interglacial transition representing the last time atmospheric CO
2 rose by a substantial amount prior to the industrial period. Still, more
complete spatial and temporal documentation of the last glacial termination
is needed to hone our understanding of global climate dynamics and to allow
ongoing global warming to be placed into a proper paleoclimatic context.
This talk will present glacier chronologies of the last glacial maximum and
subsequent termination from locations along a north-south Australasian
transect: the Southern Alps of New Zealand, the Mongolian Altai Mountains,
and the Haizi Shan of western China. These emerging glacier chronologies
allow us to reconstruct local climates and answer important questions about
forcing factors that punctuated and subsequently ended the last global ice
age.
