The Institute for Ethics in Public Life invites you to join us for
"Journalism and Democracy," with special guests Ken Picard (a
journalist at *Seven
Days*) and Dr. Shakuntala Rao (Communications Studies Department) TODAY at
3:30pm in person in Hawkins 233 or on Zoom (see below).
Journalists fill a critical role in democracies. Access to accurate
information on the activities of elected officials and government agencies
is essential for citizens to be active and effective participants in the
democratic process.
For this discussion, we'll talk with Ken Picard about the operations of
local news organizations, the role they play in the democratic process in
America, and the decline of local news media over the last 20 years. We'll
also discuss the rise of new forms of independent journalism on social
media, how social media is influencing knowledge creation, and the
implications this has due to the heavy reliance on social media for news of
many young people.
Ken Picard has been a *Seven Days* staff writer since 2002. He has won
numerous awards for his work, including the Vermont Press Association's
2005 Mavis Doyle award, a general excellence prize for reporters.
Dr. Shakuntala Rao is professor of Communication Studies at
SUNY-Plattsburgh. Her teaching and research areas have focused on global
media ethics, journalism practices and popular culture. She has published
extensively and influentially in both journalism and interdisciplinary
journals. Her most recent publications are the anthologies, "Indian
Journalism in a New Era" and "Media Ethics and Justice in the Age of
Globalization." She has been a visiting professor at the department of
journalism at University of Stockholm in Sweden, Central University of
Caracas in Venezuela and Tsinghua University in Beijing, PRC.
You are welcome to attend in-person at the Institute for Ethics in Public
Life (Hawkins 233) or via Zoom (see below).
