Tuesday Talks presents Dr. Margarita Garcia-Notario, Adjunct Lecturer of
the Modern Languages and Cultures Department at SUNY Plattsburgh, speaking
on "The Relevance of Ancient Teachings and Aristotle's Golden Mean in
Today's Character Education" on *Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at 5pm* in the
Angell College Center's Alumni Conference Room. Below is an abstract of Dr.
Garcia-Notario's presentation.

Ancient teachings are replete with warnings about our human frailty and
vulnerability, not just from our mortality, but from our inevitable
encounters with disagreement, evil, and our own conflicting desires. Human
lives, they say, are the sum of choice, the help and guidance we receive,
and the destiny set by the gods. How we use freedom is what we can control;
our fate is where we actualize it. My presentation shows the benefits to
human flourishing of classic myths and Aristotle’s focus on character and
virtue development. These stand in stark contrast to today's educational
politics of weakness, victimhood, and the ongoing need for institutional
protections. Instead of promoting our youths’ internal strength and
resolve to face challenges, the "new ways" weaken and make them dependent.
A good look at Aristotle and the classic myths can help to put youth back
on solid ground for their life adventures.
