The Institute for Ethics in Public Life invites you to join us for
"Collaboration and its Malcontents" with special guest Institute Senior
Scholar Stuart Brody at 3:30pm on Wednesday, Nov. 13, either in-person in
Hawkins 233 or on Zoom (see below).
In 2022, Stuart Brody began a search for the surviving relatives of Esther
Frenkel and her son Richard (pictured), French Jews rounded up in Paris in
the summer of 1942, then deported and murdered in Auschwitz.

His journey led him from Israel to Paris and back again to Israel, with
surprising help from friends along the way, and finally the consoling
reunion with Esther’s nieces who survived the war and the Holocaust and
living in Israel.
He will discuss the special horror that French collaboration contributed to
the Holocaust, and describe the stark terror of the round-up of 11,000
Parisian mothers and children in the summer of 1942.
Ultimately, he will invite reflections on what he calls the twin towers of
the Jewish experience: vulnerability and tenacity and the broader
discussion of the “ethics” of collaboration.
Stuart Brody, Esq., has been involved with the Institute for Ethics in
Public Life for roughly 15 years, and is a member of the inaugural group of
Senior Scholars. He is the author of *Humphrey and Me *(2023)*, *for which
he won the Grateful American Book prize for historical fiction (2024). He
is also the author of *The Law of Small Things: Creating a Habit of
Integrity in a Culture of Mistrust* (Penguin Random House, 2019). He is
also an Adjunct Instructor at the University of Arizona in the School of
Government and Public Policy.
Please join us in-person in Hawkins 233 or on Zoom.
