The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Dr. Curt Gervich, *Professor, Center for Earth and Environmental Science
SUNY Plattsburgh

*Enhancing Sustainability and Resilience in Cities with Radical Urban Games*

Urban gaming represents a new form of media and entertainment in which game
designers create place-based activities that allow participants to
experience cities through play. Scavenger hunts, outdoor puzzle races,
geocaching, augmented reality games and orienteering are common examples of
urban games. Activist game designers are revolutionizing urban gaming to
harness the platform for radical social change. Their games offer
opportunities for observing the social, political, economic and
environmental systems that shape cities, and imagining how these structures
may be transformed to overcome inequality, oppression, violence and
environmental degradation. This research presents case studies of radical
urban games that confront hegemonic power structures of oppression and
violence, and advance sustainability and resilience.
