The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Beryl Kahn, *PhD Student CUNY Grad Center

*Environmental Stressors as Controls on Nitrogen Removal and Recycling in
Urban Salt Marshes*

As climate change continues to threaten coastal areas with increased
flooding, erosion, and habitat conversion, urban wetland areas increasingly
serve as key protective habitats against these threats. My research focuses
on the impacts of environmental stressors such as acidification and habitat
loss on the ecosystem services and functioning of urban salt marshes. In
this talk, I explore the impacts of coastal acidification and marsh loss on
the ecosystem service of denitrification (where reactive nitrogen is
removed from the water column, a beneficial process in eutrophic urban
waterways) and the conditions under which nitrogen removal may shift to
retention/recycling through a competing process known as dissimilatory
reduction of nitrate to ammonium (DNRA).
