The CEES Seminar Series presents:
*Allen Gontz, *Professor Applied Geology Clarkson University
*Radar Love OR How I Stopped Digging and Learned How to Use Physics to
Understand Landscape Evolution*
Understanding how landscapes change at various spatial and temporal scales
is critical when considering the unprecedented changes that are facing our
planet. So how do we accomplish this task? We can’t just walk down the
street and chat with a few people, we can’t go to the library and check out
a book… or can we? The Earth is its own library. The entire history of the
Earth is written in the sediments and rock that compose the surface of the
Earth. We just need to learn how to read them and interpret across the gaps
that are missing. This requires a detailed understanding of the processes
that shape the surface of the Earth and what controls their rates and
intensity. Taking geologic samples via cores is a common way to look at the
history contained in a lake, wetland ocean, dune or any other location.
However, this provides a limited understanding of the system. It’s like
taking one letter off of each page in a book and trying to understand the
entire book. This is where geophysics become important. The capacity
of techniques like ground penetrating radar, seismic reflection electrical
resistivity and others allow for imaging large areas quickly to provide
context to the cores… effectively bring the entire page into focus to allow
for a better reading of the history. Throughout the presentation, Dr Gontz
will showcase several applications of geophysics through his own research
at sites that include UNESCO World Heritage Sites, prominent archaeological
sites as well as wetlands lakes, rivers and dunes from around the world and
in our own backyard.
*Friday Feb 23rd * *3:30pm. *
*Hudson 106*
*Reception prior to the talk at 3:00*
*There is also a lunch for Students with Dr. Gontz at noon in Hud 155. All
Students are welcome!*
