The CEES Seminar Series presents:
*Dr. Neil Pederson*, Forest Ecologist, Harvard Forest
*Old-Growth Forests are More than Big Trees & Carbon, But Also: Barbara
McMartin Seems Correct About Adirondack Old-Growth*
When we envision old-growth forests, we likely imagine big trees that
overwhelm our notion of being human. Redwoods or Giant Sequoias often come
to mind. While big trees are fascinating, wondrous, and, as has become a
hot topic, capable of storing large amounts of carbon, as a collective in
the form of an old-growth forest, they can be a process rather than a
destination. Key here, old-growth forests represent time. Time immemorial.
What happens over centuries and millennia? We are still learning but have
seen that they are teaching lessons beyond current textbooks. To take this
talk to northern New York State, I will turn towards the Adirondacks State
Park and highlight the foresight of the late Dr. Barbara McMartin. It has
long been thought that the Adirondacks are home to the most amount of
old-growth forest in the eastern US. Barbara put forth the idea that, with
a wiggle of adjustment, the Adirondacks might be home to more than we
thought. Our research over the last two years indicates to me she was
correct.
*Friday Dec 8th **3:30pm. *
*Hudson 106*
*Reception prior to the talk at 3:00*
*There is also a lunch for students to talk with Neil starting at noon in
Hudson 155. This is open to all students!*
