Music Weekend 2024

Plattsburgh, NY - The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music will present a
Weekend of Music from Thursday, April 25 through Sunday, April 28. The
excitement begins when the SUNY Plattsburgh Symphonic Band takes to the E.
Glenn Giltz Auditorium stage for the Eclipse Reminisce concert on Thursday,
April 25 at 7:30pm. Join director Daniel Gordon as the band performs
space-themed pieces that include the Fanfare from Also sprach Zarathustra
(aka the Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey), and selections from Holst’s The
Planets. This concert is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, April 27 at 2pm, Soprano Olivia Sorrell will present her
Senior Performance joined by pianist and department chair, Karen Becker.
Ms. Sorrell’s concert includes Italian, German, French, and English art
songs. The program also features music from Fiddler on the Roof and State
Fair. This concert will be performed in the Krinovitz Recital Hall and is
free and open to the public.

Sunday, April 28, the weekend comes to a finale with Jazz! Starting at
10am, director Matt Pray with special guest Jerry Weldon presents a Music
Clinic featuring local high school students as well as our Plattsburgh
state Jazz Band members. This is followed up in the evening as the SUNY
Plattsburgh Jazz Ensemble, with special guest Jerry Weldon, takes to the E.
Glenn Giltz Auditorium at 7:30pm. Performing favorites such as Moondance
and Fly Me to the Moon, the concert is sure to entertain. This concert will
also be free and open to the public.

represents the 'bar-walkin', hard-blowing, tenor legends in our

Veteran tenor sax man Jerry Weldon joined the legendary Lionel Hampton
Orchestra in 1981 and has worked with dozens of jazz luminaries over the
past three plus decades. In 1990, Jerry joined Harry Connick Jr.'s newly
formed big band and Jerry was seen daily as part of the “house band” on
HARRY, Connick’s daytime variety show which aired from 2016-2018. Jerry can
also regularly be found gigging, both as a leader and a sideman, at clubs
in the New York area...and beyond
