The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Masters in Natural Resources and Ecology Thesis proposal talks*

Three Graduate students in the Masters in Natural Resources and Ecology
program will give short (15-20 minutes) talks on their proposed research or
internship projects.
Samantha Beck: "Beyond the Binary”: Gender Identity and the Pursuit of
Environmental Career Trajectories
In order to effectively tackle the urgent environmental challenges we face
today, it is imperative to foster diversity within the field. In terms of
gender diversity, individuals who identify as women and non-binary are
significantly underrepresented in scientific professions, particularly
conservation science careers. To assist in meeting this need, we will
conduct survey research and participant interviews to explore the
relationships between identity, connectedness to nature (CTN),
environmental stewardship, and career aspirations. Our aim is to identify
and address barriers within the field in order to build a more resilient,
diverse and adaptive workforce in natural science.

Caley Doell: Assessing Bird Populations in Wildfire Disturbed Jack Pine
Barrens
The Altona Flat Rock is a jack-pine dominated, fire reliant, and globally
rare ecosystem that is an important piece of local habitat diversity. My
research will first examine how bird populations use this unique habitat
compared to surrounding northern hardwood forest, as well as across 3 years
of study between 1978 and 2023. Next, I will dive further into the dynamics
of a specific species of concern, the eastern whip-poor-will (*Antrostomus
vociferus*), to better understand how they are using this landscape for
breeding and foraging.

Lydia Harvey: Getting My Feet Wet: A graduate internship delineating
wetlands with the Adirondack Park Agency.
Wetlands are one of the most important ecosystems for people and the
environment. In addition to being vital habitat for many species, they
provide services like flood prevention and carbon storage. For my graduate
internship, I will be working with the Adirondack Park Agency delineating
wetlands and mapping deep water marshes throughout the Park.

*Friday April 26th * *3:30pm. *
