*Chemistry and Biochemistry Seminar-Wednesday April 17th noon to 1 pm
(Hudson 106)*
*Invited speaker:* Professor Pat Forgione, Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry, Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec , Canada
*Speaker Bio:* The Forgione group is focused on sustainable approaches to
medicinal chemistry, i.e., discovering environmentally friendly chemical
transformations (green chemistry) and their application to the discovery of
small molecules to treat diseases (medicinal chemistry). This research is
at the interface of synthetic chemistry, pharmacology and
biology/biochemistry and aims to develop novel molecules to treat a variety
of diseases or health-related problems. Dr Forgione, in collaboration with
Dr. T. Hebert (McGill University), has discovered a novel small-molecule
modulator with a unique mechanism of action that could lead to novel cancer
treatments. Dr. Forgione’s experience includes his co-invention of a new
drug, Faldaprevir, which reached Phase III clinical trials for the
treatment of Hepatitis C. Additionally, he has discovered a new compound
based on his green chemistry synthesis at Concordia that has promising
anti-cancer activity (with Dr. A. Piekny, Biology) that has resulted in two
patents and the formation of a spin-off company, OncoLeap Therapeutics.
Overall, his research has led to over 50 publications and has been named as
a co-inventor on 13 patents.
