The CEES Seminar Series presents:

*Using Genetic Techniques to Understand and Conserve Brook Trout
(Salvelinus fontinalis) in Adirondack Streams and Lakes*

In the Northern Forest region that encompasses much of the northeastern
United States and eastern Canadian provinces, Brook Trout *Salvelinus
fontinalis* are an iconic native stream-dwelling salmonid and an ecological
indicator species of healthy, coldwater streams, ponds, and rivers. This
species has also been stocked extensively throughout the region since the
1800s to supplement and restore a recreational fishery. Nonnative trout
(Rainbow Trout *Oncorhynchus mykiss* and Brown Trout *Salmo trutta*) have
also been stocked extensively in the region. To effectively conserve Brook
Trout in a changing climate and transformed ecosystem, it's necessary to
learn more about brook trout distribution and the impacts of stocking on
wild populations. Through her masters thesis and subsequent professional
research, Carrie Pershyn has utilized multiple genetic techniques,
including environmental DNA (eDNA) and microsatellite loci to examine the
genetic diversity and geographic range of Brook Trout in tributary streams
and lakes of the Ausable River, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York
State. In her seminar, she will explore the evolution of both projects and
identify further research and conservation needs for wild Adirondack Brook
Trout.
