JAMES AUGUSTUS WILSON WRITING AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PAPER ON AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN TOPIC

Open to any student on campus.

James Augustus Wilson was born in Williamsport, PA in 1874.  He was the
grandson of formerly enslaved people who had both purchased their freedom.
In 1893, putting himself through school, Wilson graduated from Hampton
Industrial School in Alabama, and then graduated from Plattsburgh Normal
School in 1902.  He went on to study at Wesleyan University in Middletown,
CT, where he distinguished himself by winning the prestigious Wesleyan
Prize for best Commencement Essay.

Students should submit their best work(s) for evaluation.  Papers will be
judged on content, clarity, thoroughness, and quality of writing.  The
honoree will receive a book dealing with African-American issues, along
with an award certificate, and be recognized during the Annual Awards
Ceremony for the School of Arts & Sciences.

If you have a qualifying paper to submit from the spring or fall 2023 or
spring 2024 semesters, please email your paper as an attachment to Kirstin
Menoff at klagr002 at plattsburgh.edu by Friday, April 12, 2024, and it will
be considered by the evaluation committee.
