Dear University Campus Community,

As you know, a total solar eclipse is set to grace our skies on April 8,
2024, putting us directly in the path of an incredible celestial event. To
celebrate, we are hosting an eclipse watch party at Hawkins Pond from 2:00
PM to 4:30 PM.

To view the solar eclipse, you must wear proper eye protection. The campus
will provide protective eclipse glasses free of charge to ensure the safety
of all attendees. (Employees have already received their glasses.) Sunglasses
should not be used to look at the sun. It is only safe to look directly at
the sun without protection during the Totality phase, which is when the
moon completely covers the sun. In the Plattsburgh area, this time is from 3:26
PM to 3:29 PM. Click here <https://eclipse-explorer.smce.nasa.gov/> to view
times in other locations.

Students can collect their Eclipse glasses at the following locations and
times:

   -

Clinton Dining Hall: April 3rd from 8:30 AM to 1:30 PM
   -

Angell College Center (ACC): April 4th and 5th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
   -

Hawkins Pond during the Eclipse Watch Party: April 8th from 2:00 PM to
   4:00 PM

Please remember that regular sunglasses will NOT adequately protect your
eyes during the eclipse. It's crucial to wear eclipse-specific eye
protection to avoid damage to your vision.

Additionally, if you plan to use binoculars, telescopes, or smartphones to
observe the eclipse, make sure they are equipped with special eclipse
filters. These filters are essential for protecting your eyes and your
device's lenses from the intense solar radiation.

For more information about the eclipse and related events, including
alternative viewing locations and educational resources, please visit the
university’s eclipse webpage
<https://www.plattsburgh.edu/plattslife/eclipse-2024/index.html>.

Let's come together as a community to witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon
safely and enjoyably.

Thank you.
