Please join us for the following Next in Advising…. Faculty/Staff Advisor
Development Session: “What Do Your Students Do, When They’re Not in Class
with You?” with special guest panelists Jake Avery, Christy Minck, and Jim
Sherman. Wed, Sept 13, 12-1pm on Zoom
<https://plattsburgh.zoom.us/j/91078113534>.

All are welcome. Though Next in Advising content is geared to advisors, you
do not need to be an academic advisor to attend, participate, ask
questions. No matter your role on campus, you will learn something you did
not know.

Our ability to connect with our advisees is strengthened when we understand
what their lives are like outside of their time with us–in very
contemporary and local terms. This session offers a look at some of what
it’s like to be a SUNY Plattsburgh, on-campus student in 2023. Our
professional staff panelists’ insights will (re)acquaint us all with a
working knowledge of some of the broader community, social and recreational
domains of this campus–and all that goes into it. For example:

   -

What does campus housing & community living programming look like? Are
   there still first-year floors/halls? Triples/singles?
   -

Do students hang out in lounges or isolate on devices?
   -

What’s the difference between student association and student
involvement–and how active are students in clubs and orgs?
   -

There are prayer, meditation, and music spaces for student wellness?
   -

What’s the vibe–school spirit, anxieties, student currency, pain points,
   current issues?
   -

And what’s in the works in campus life (e.g., housing, physical and
   mental wellness)?

As you begin to invite new advisees for their initial meeting with you,
this session is an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the latest in
campus life. Much effort and programming goes on outside the classroom to
facilitate belonging and connection. With this awareness, we can refer
better, empathize more, and be more comfortable engaging in meaningful,
holistic dialogue with students about out-of-class factors that affect them.
