The Jewish Studies Program is pleased to announce two upcoming events on
November 1 honoring the late Dr. Vladimir Munk, Professor of Chemistry at
SUNY Plattsburgh and a beloved member of the Plattsburgh community.
At 4:30 PM, we will have a Book Reading and Author Interview with Julie
Canepa, author of the recently published novel The Missing Star. Based on
the lives of Dr. Munk and his wife, Kitty, who first met in the Terezin
concentration camp, the book paints a vivid picture of survival, loss, and
love amid the horrors of the Holocaust. Dr. Jonathan Slater, Professor
Emeritus of Journalism and Public Relations and founding Director of the
Jewish Studies Program, will lead a discussion of the book with the author,
after which Ms. Canepa will read selections from the text. Copies will be
available for purchase and signing.
The reading will take place in the Douglas and Evelyne Skopp Holocaust
Memorial Gallery in Feinberg Library. There is no charge, and the public is
welcome.
At 6:30 PM, we will have a Film Screening and Discussion featuring the
award-winning documentary Return to Auschwitz: The Survival of Vladimir
Munk. This film documents Dr. Munk’s voyage in 2020 to Auschwitz-Birkenau,
the death camp in Poland where his parents were murdered. Produced by Paul
Frederick, Bruce Carlin, and Julie Canepa, Return to Auschwitz won a number
of national and international awards, including the Regional Emmy® Award
for Best Historical/Cultural Documentary.
Following the screening, the producers will join us for questions and
discussion.
The screening will take place in the main lecture hall in Hudson Hall, room
106. There is no charge, and the public is welcome.
