Please join us for a Lunch and Learn on 12/1/23 with Alumnus Zachary
Desjardin:


Zachary Desjardins  ('17 SWK)  is a TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student
Support Services Alum. He has presented at national conferences and has
been invited to present thanks to funding from the Plattsburgh Alumni
Association.


The presentation is titled "Carrying the Weight - The True Cost of
First-Gen Guilt":

Being a First Generation College Student (FGCS) is navigating the “hidden
curriculum” while possibly carrying significant guilt for leaving their
families and responsibilities at home. This guilt can manifest itself in
lower academic persistence rates, as well as a poor sense of belonging both
in the collegiate environment and with their family. This presentation will
draw on topics of intersectionality and techniques of how to work with
FGCS. Participants will leave this session with the ability to advise with
a greater intention to address FGCS guilt and empower students to take
agency over their own academic and personal journeys.
