​"The Crisis in Haiti" - Mar. 29 (W) at 1pm on Zoom

 The Institute for Ethics in Public Life is hosting a Zoom colloquy at 1pm
on Wednesday, March 29, on the current situation in Haiti featuring Dr.
Henry Milner. While Haiti has long been plagued by political instability
and poverty, over the last few months there has been a marked escalation in
gang violence. Violent gangs have been a major problem in Haiti for decades
for a variety of reasons including poverty, political instability, and a
long-standing practice of political elites working with gangs to suppress
their political opposition. In recent months a vicious turf war has broken
out in Haiti's capitol, Port-au-Prince, resulting in a major spike in
murder, kidnapping for ransom, and sexual violence. Haiti's current
government, under Dr. Ariel Henry, has asked the international community to
deploy troops and police to restore order and help distribute humanitarian
aid, but so far no country has been willing to do so.

Dr. Milner will discuss what led to this crisis, and what, if anything, the
international community can do to help.

Dr. Henry Milner is a Senior Scholar at the Institute for Ethics in Public
Life and Research Fellow at the Chair in Electoral Studies at L'Université
du Québec à Montréal.
