Can Spatial Data be a Substitute for Field-Based Wetland Assessment Methods?

Wetland functional assessments are key in understanding the processes
driving wetland ecosystem services, but require field assessments that
become cost and time prohibitive as more wetlands are assessed. While
remote sensing based functional assessments can address these limitations,
they are themselves limited to coarser resolution data. This talk explores
ways in which spatial data can be compared to field-based wetland
ecological data and used as a proxy for field-based methods without a
significant loss of accuracy. The resulting assessment protocol provides
the means to assess wetland ecological function across broad geographic
regions (e.g., watersheds) and in applications such as wetland restoration.
