“Conversations on Canada Series” featuring Dr. Christina Keppie.



Presentation Title: *“The Acadian Diaspora and the Challenges of Diasporic
Membership.”*

Overview:

Who are the Acadians and what does it mean to be one? How does one belong
to a community with such a fractured understanding of membership? This talk
will look at the meaning systems of belonging in Acadia, and the challenges
these meaning systems present for a diaspora that consistently argue for
and against the value of language as part of community membership.



Presenter's Short Bio:

Dr. Christina Keppie is Director of the Center for Canadian-American
Studies at Western Washington University and also serves as the President
of the Association for Canadian Studies in the United states.

Dr. Keppie’s teaching and research interests focus on language attitudes,
ideology, and the role of festivals and celebrations in the construction of
Acadian diasporic identity as revealed through an ethnographic framework,
on which she has published widely throughout her career. Her most recent
publication, a book chapter titled “Bringing Sexy Back to Canada,” is a
reflection of her approach and challenges to teaching French and
Francophone Canada at a transboundary American institution in *Reflections
from Abroad: The Construction of Canadian Identity* - a scholarly book
volume published by Palgrave McMillan and co-edited by Chris Kirkey and
Richard Nimijean.
