*Adaptive management of urban tidal wetlands to improve shoreline
resiliency in New York City*Surface waters in New York City (NYC) are
polluted by billions of gallons of untreated wastewater released annually
from combined sewage overflows (CSOs). Nutrient pollution from CSOs
contributes to eutrophication and poor water quality. Coastal wetlands help
remove excess nitrogen and other nutrients from waterways, but NYC has lost
over 85% of its wetlands to urban development. Here we investigate
nitrogen-removal services in a living shoreline project on the
Harlem River. This project is a continuation of the Sherman Creek Living
Shoreline Monitoring Plan, using adaptive management techniques to learn
and adapt with the landscape and construct long-lasting living shorelines
that support biodiversity, remove nitrogen, and store carbon.

*Caloric Availability for Waterfowl as a Metric for Wetland Mitigation
Success*

After a long history of wetland loss, the federal government adopted a "no
net loss" policy of wetland conservation requiring mitigation efforts in
response to wetland disturbance. My research explores an alternative way of
measuring the success of wetland mitigation by quantifying the forage
available for waterfowl across a gradient of mitigation quality.
