*The Institute for Ethics in Public Life* presents *"The Power and Perils
of Generative AI"*, at noon on April 26 (W) in the Thomas Moran Seminar
Room (Hawkins 233) and on Zoom.

"Generative AI", artificial intelligence systems that can create data such
as text, images, and audio in response to our requests, has recently
exploded into the public consciousness due to the release of services such
as ChatGPT and DALL-E. These systems, while capable of seemingly miraculous
tasks like instantly writing an essay or creating an image, raise important
questions about how we can safely use these tools due to some of the
problems we are discovering with their output.

In this conversation with faculty members from the Department of Computer
Science, we will discuss the basics of how these systems are created, what
they are doing, and the ethical questions people are raising about how they
are programmed and how they work.

Participants will include the following:

*Del Hart* is a Professor in the Computer Science department, and current
Department Chair. He has done research in the area of autonomous
multi-agent systems and taught courses on Information Theory, Databases,
and Computer Languages.

*Ned Lecky *is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department.
He has worked in the factory automation industry for 40 years and has led
robotics and machine learning projects at Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. He
also helps evaluate startup companies and their technology for venture
capital funds.

*Jan Plaza* is an Associate Professor in Computer Science and a former
fellow of the Institute of Ethics in Public Life. His professional
background is in theoretical foundations of computer science and in
mathematics. His hobbies include history, philosophy and methodology of
science.

*Kevin McCullen* is an Associate Professor of Computer Science. He is an
Electrical and Computer Engineer, with over 30 years of industry
experience. His primary research areas are Computer Science and Robotics
pedagogy. He has taught the Computer Science ethics course as well as a
broad range of other courses. He is a fan of Science Fiction, and is
particularly fascinated by the overlap between SF and technological
innovation.
