Please join us for the “Distinguished Fulbright Chair in Québec Studies
Lecture,” featuring Dr. Jean-Philippe Marcoux, Professor of American
Literature at Université Laval as the Spring 2023 SUNY Plattsburgh
Distinguished Fulbright Chair in Québec Studies.
TALK TITLE: “The Society of Umbra: Coalition Politics and Poetics from the
Lower East Side to Montreal”
DATE/TIME: Wednesday, April 5 at 4:00 pm
LOCATION: Krinovitz Hall inside Hawkins Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh
DESCRIPTION: The Society of Umbra is a group of poets, musicians, visual
artists who gathered in Lower East Side apartments and downtown cafés and
bars in the early sixties to workshop and read their poems. The Society
also produced a magazine, *Umbra*, which ran for five numbers. The
2022-2023 Distinguished Fulbright Lecture examines the various interactions
and collaborations that Umbra poets had with countercultural poets and
black radical political organizations in order to show how Umbra has been
at the center of avant-garde poetry and revolutionary politics that also
find echoes beyond U.S. borders. To this end, the Lecture considers the
production of a Digital Archive on Umbra as a means to illuminate the links
between the Lower East Side scene and Montreal’s literary and political
landscapes, between, for instance, the Beat Generation and Leonard Cohen
and the Vehicle Poets, between the Black Panthers and the FLQ, and between
Black Power advocates who congregated at the Congress of Black Writers in
1968 at McGill University.
Light refreshments to immediately follow outside of Krinovitz, your kind
RSVP in advance to help us confirm catering needs would be appreciated.
