of Canada-US relations."*
Presentation Date, Time and Location:
*Thursday, October 13, 2022*
*5:00 p.m.*
*Krinovitz Hall, Hawkins Hall, SUNY Plattsburgh *
Overview:
This address will highlight how and why the friendship between Canadian
prime ministers and American presidents can play an important role in not
only facilitating cooperation on key bilateral issues, but in managing or
accommodating dissent when major policy differences between the two
countries surface. It has often been said that Canada and the United
States have long enjoyed a "special relationship", but in reality, they
represent two sovereign countries with political interests and agendas that
do not necessarily align. When conflicts emerge, and they invariably will,
it is critical for prime ministers and presidents to draw on their personal
interactions in order to better navigate one of the world's most important
relationships. While some leaders have been able to do this brilliantly,
others have succumbed to domestic and international pressures that have
compromised the strength and durability of the bilateral relationship.
