National Preparedness Month | Individuals with Special Needs

Campus Community:

Have you started to prepare for emergencies yet? Remember, you can begin
preparing for emergencies by taking three simple steps:

   1. Be informed -  Know what disasters could affect your area, how to get
   emergency alerts, and where you would go if you and your family need to
   evacuate.
   2. Make a plan - Plan ahead and build an emergency supplies kit
   3. Take action – Get involved

When preparing for an emergency, it is important to keep in mind specific
medical needs that you or individuals in your family may have. For example,
additional items may be necessary to meet the needs of a temporary or
long-term disability such as mobility aids, eyeglasses, additional oxygen
for those with respiratory difficulties, medications, batteries for hearing
aids, etc.

As you develop your emergency plan:

   - Keep in mind any transportation needs that may be required to assist
   you in your evacuation.
   - Make arrangements for alternate modes of transportation and assistance
   if needed.
   - Create a personal support network made up of family, friends,
   co-workers, and neighbors to assist in an emergency.
   - Identify alternative locations and availability of life-sustaining
   equipment for treatment. If you use medical equipment, consider having
   backup equipment stored at your evacuation site.
   - Be sure to register for special assistance programs that may be
   available in the community.
